The Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) is recruiting participants for its Hanmun Fellowship program, which is designed to promote the balanced development of Korean studies by enhancing the Hanmun (Classical Chinese) proficiency of the next generation of scholars from abroad. We encourage anyone interested in taking Hanmun courses at the Academy of Korean Studies, a leading institution in Korean studies, to apply.
AKS Hanmun Fellowship
1. Program Details: The program includes Hanmun lectures, memorization exercises, independent research, and field trips. All sessions will be conducted in Korean.
2. Program Periods: - 13th Session (Beginner): March 3, 2026 (Tue) – June 19, 2026 (Fri) - 14th Session (Advanced): September 1, 2026 (Tue) – December 18, 2026 (Fri)
3. Location: The Academy of Korean Studies
4. Eligibility: - Undergraduate and graduate students majoring in Korean studies at universities abroad. - Excludes Korean nationals. - Students who have completed their coursework (i.e., "su-ryo-saeng") are eligible, but graduates are not. - Since the program is conducted in Korean, a high level of Korean proficiency is required. - For the Advanced session, prior completion of a basic Hanmun course is mandatory.
5. Required Documents: 1) Common Documents: - Completed application form (1 copy) - Download the attached file. - Certificate of enrollment or course completion (1 copy). - Letter of recommendation from an academic advisor (1 copy), stating why Hanmun is necessary for your studies. - Copy of your official TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) score report, if applicable.

8. Video Interview: - Who: Applicants who pass the document screening. - Notification of Document Screening Results: Expected on October 28, 2025 (Tue) (Individual email notification). - Interview Period: Individual interviews will be conducted between November 4, 2025 (Tue) and November 6, 2025 (Thu). - Note: The exact schedule will be announced later, considering the number of successful applicants and time differences in their respective countries.
9. Final Result Notification: Expected on November 12, 2025 (Wed) (Individual email notification).
10. Curriculum - Beginner: Gyemongpyeon, Analects, Mencius, Samguk Sagi, Sohak Jipju, etc. - Advanced: Analects, Mencius, Samguk Yusa, reading of prose selections, etc.
11. Financial Support:
- Airfare: Round-trip economy-class airfare for one person. - Note: The actual cost will be reimbursed, but it cannot exceed the overseas airfare guidelines set in the 2026 budget plan. - Monthly Stipend: 750,000 KRW. - Accommodation: Free use of the on-campus guesthouse. - Insurance: Enrollment in accident insurance.
